Winter Park Videographer Finds
Successful Formula For Magic

There are many elements involved in creating magic at a wedding. Some would say it takes candles, music, beautiful flowers and a magnificent cake. A videographer would say the magic is the reflection of love the candlelight illuminates in a bride's eyes as she looks at her groom; the pride that fills the room as the father and daughter swirl across the floor to "Daddy's Little Girl"; the emotion that overcomes the groom as he slides the ring on her finger on an altar filled with flowers; and the playful teasing of a new husband and wife feeding each other cake.

Andy Hutchinson, owner of Video Magic, is a videographer who has found the formula for magic. Hutchinson has been working on this formula since opening his business in 1989. He has experienced tremendous success not only with local Central Florida weddings, but with brides and grooms from all over the globe as a referred videographer for Disney's Fairy Tale Weddings at Walt Disney World.

No matter what nationality, religion or custom, Hutchinson says he has one common strand in all his clients. They want a high quality product that captures each memory of their special event with very little intrusion by the videographer, and consideration for the budgets involved for any size wedding. Video Magic strives to achieve all those goals within their formula for magic.

Quality is Hutchinson's number one concern. Every moment that is captured on a video is precious to those family members. A photograph can show the tears of joy on a mother's face as she watches her baby girl wed or the precious flower girl spilling her petals. Video brings that memory back even more vividly, adding the soft music that was playing as the bridesmaids entered, and the quiver of emotion in a voice saying "I do." The facial expressions, the laughter, the toast, the celebration of the event are all saved to be replayed and enjoyed. Poor sound quality, lighting and camera placement can ruin the opportunity to relive it. "Several couples have contacted me and asked me to restore a well-intentioned but poor quality video a relative shot for them, "says Hutchinson. "They complain about the unfocused shots, the terrible audio and very erratic shaky videos. At that point, there is nothing I can do. Those moments are lost."

Video Magic has taken several steps to prevent this. For instance, when Disney's Wedding Pavilion was opened in July of 1995, Hutchinson was hired to tape an event on the first official day of wedding ceremonies. He went to the Pavilion several days ahead of time to see the location and get a feel for the lighting and camera angles. Right away he detected a challenge with the lighting in the Pavilion, which is built with three walls of solid windows. "The abundance of daylight that floods these windows causes the bride and groom to appear very dark and silhouetted against the bright background outside, "Hutchinson observes. He went into action, researching what cameras would work best in this situation. He chose a new high technology three-chip S-VHS camera, which produces the high quality TV appearance that people expect to see. The choice proved ideal for the Pavilion.

The next challenge to overcome was low lighting levels found within a convention center reception, or at Disney's Wedding Pavilion at night when there is no sunlight in the background. "We tried to find lights for our cameras that were sensitive to low light but would not detract from the atmosphere of the event. We know people work very hard to create a candlelight ambiance, and I have been to events where the videographer's light equipment was distracting. I don't want to draw attention away from the bride and groom and the environment they've created for their guests. I love for my clients to say 'How did you get that shot? I did not even know you were there.' That makes me happy," he explains.

Hutchinson furthers his objective of blending in with the atmosphere by wearing a tuxedo to events, and by making sure that the movement of himself and the camera is never the focal point of the event.

There are many people who do not realize how much of their wedding day will be remembered as a blur. The flurry of activity and the abundance of emotions are sometimes overwhelming and it is only when every one starts talking afterwards that brides and grooms realize they didn't see everyone, or remember everything that was said. The bride is often the one who has picked all the flowers, music, colors, candles, dresses and other items that make the ceremony so special, yet the bride enters last and leaves first so she is never able to see how it all comes together.

Because of this, it is such a shame when couples are forced to choose not to have their event professionally videotaped due to budget constraints. Video Magic has even attempted to correct this problem with their magical formula. They offer a gift certificate option to brides and grooms that allow family members and friends to contribute any amount toward the price of a video package as a gift. This allows the couple to have their memories for a lifetime, and allows family members to give something that they know will truly be treasured, used often, and passed on to the future generations.

"One of the worst parts of my job is knowing people will miss out on a high quality record of their special day because they feel they can't afford professional videography. Especially when so many couples call me afterwards to say how happy they are that they went ahead and did it. Many even order extra copies after they see it! So I'm trying to make that possible for everyone while maintaining the level of technology and expertise that I know will give them a quality product," Hutchinson explains.

Once Video Magic's formula has been put in place for a couple and the event is done, the only thing left for Hutchinson to do is to provide the newlyweds with their video as fast as possible! His work doesn't end when the camera stops rolling. Hutchinson says, "I have to get in the editing room and get a finished product. It is not unusual for the brides to call us first after returning from their honeymoon, even before calling family and friends! They can't wait to see it." Video Magic makes every effort to have the video to the couple in three to six weeks. They even put that in writing to ease the minds of their anxious couples!

A wedding is such a special celebration that unites families, friends, customs and lives. Hutchinson's passion and enthusiasm for capturing all of this shows in his work, and in his magical formula for memories that live again and again and again.
